The Movie Survey
Lifted from fellow Rhode Islander, Cosmic.
1. Name a movie that you have seen more than 10 times.
“The Godfather,” “The Godfather Part II,” “Gone with the Wind.”
2. Name a movie you have seen multiple times in a theater.
“Repo Man.” Highly recommended by Tim, so I saw it the following night with Olivia. I went to work and raved about it to coworker J.D. He went to see it that Friday and asked me to go with him. It seemed weird going to the same movie on back-to-back Fridays, but I was happy to see it again.
3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie.
Oh, even good actors can make some really bad movies – but it usually doesn’t hurt as much if you at least get to gaze at Denzel Washington for a couple of hours.
4. Name an actor that would make you less inclined to see a movie.
Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Rob Schneider.
5. Name a movie you can and do quote from.
“Repo Man,” “Pretty in Pink” (“Do I offend?”), “The Godfather” (I and II), “Planet of the Apes.”
6. Name a movie that you know all the words of all the songs.
I’m not into musicals. Wait – if movies like “Rude Boy” and “The Doors” and (of course!) all the Beatles’ movies count…well, that’s different. Don’t forget “This Is Spinal Tap” and “Stop Making Sense.”
7. Name a movie you have been known to sing along to.
I do not sing along to movies. Thank me.
8. Name a movie you recommend everyone see.
“Supersize Me.” Let’s shut down those hideous school lunch programs. I also recommend any movie from which you can learn some history.
9. Name a movie that you own.
“Rude Boy.” My hard to find VHS tape was a good reason to keep my VCR. It’ll never be released on DVD, right? Wrong, as of last year. And Tim gave it to me for Christmas. I didn’t even have to ask for it. Ah, the magic of the season.
10. Name an actor that launched his/her acting career in another medium but has entertained you with his/her acting chops.
Huh? “[A]n actor that launched his/her acting career in another medium?” Should “acting” be omitted, or am I dense? Is this like singers turned actors? Am I trying too hard? Regardless, I’m drawing a blank.
11. Have you ever seen a movie at a drive-in? If so, what?
Many movies at drive-ins. There were three drive-ins in Smalltown. Last year’s Girls’ Night Out (summer edition), was, at my suggestion, at RI’s only remaining drive-in. I wore pajamas.
12. Ever made out in a movie?
Yes, at one of the Smalltown drive-ins. Joe had the nicest green eyes…
13. Name a movie that you have been meaning to see, but haven’t gotten around to yet.
Too many to name. “Munich” has been on the coffee table for months.
14. Have you ever walked out of a movie?
Yes. One of those Clint Eastwood/orangutan movies. Olivia and I endured nearly twenty minutes of sheer agony before leaving and slipping in to “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” We sort of created our own refund policy.
15. Name a movie that made you cry in the theater.
I’m not much of a movie crier, but my eyes welled up at “Sophie’s Choice.” Rotten Nazis.
16. Popcorn?
Occasionally. NO yellow grease. I prefer to bring my own – M&M’s and a bottle of water.
17. How often do you go to the movie theater as opposed to renting them or watching them at home?
There is no rhyme or reason.
18. What’s the last movie you saw in a theater?
“Man of the Year.” Kelly and I had our choices narrowed to “Man of the Year,” “The Departed,” and “Little Miss Sunshine.” We decided to enjoy our birthday dinner (featuring cake and champagne) without worrying about the time and then go to whichever movie was about to start. MOTY, my third choice, was our result.
19. What is your favorite/preferred genre of movie?
I’m game for just about anything except action flicks. I’ve never seen an Ahh-nold movie. Car chases, stuff blowing up, and overacted fistfights with exaggerated sound effects (and/or orangutans) do not interest me.
20. What was the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?
A Kurt Russell Disney movie.
21. What movie do you wish you had never seen?
I live a life with few regrets. If a movie sucked, then the company was good. And maybe we can even make fun of the movie and our poor choice for years to come. If I’m watching at home, alone, then I can press Stop. Having said all that, “Wedding Crashers.” Olivia and I suffered through this a few months ago. Coworker Annie lent it to me, and even though it didn’t interest me, I felt compelled to at least take it home. I wound up at Olivia’s that weekend. One of her coworkers had likewise raved about the movie. We kept watching, waiting for it to get funny. It didn’t. Had we known, we would not have watched the whole damn thing – or any of it, for that matter. We couldn’t believe it was only two hours. It seemed much longer, an indicator of how much we both disliked it. Couldn’t even make fun of it. Two thumbs down for this unfunny pile of garbage. Sorry, Annie.
22. What is the weirdest movie you enjoyed?
I like weird. Weird is my normal. “After Hours.” Come on – a movie with a punk club that has Mohawk Night?! Paul spends the rest of the night trying to get home, dealing with angry cabbies, dead women (and their bartender husbands), clumsy cat burglars, quirky sculptresses, unstable waitresses, condescending bouncers, and irate mobs led by ice cream truck drivers. Fun stuff. (Sounds like Somnambulist’s roll call of past dates.)
Cosmic, I also liked “Eating Raoul.” Sandy thought “Pulp Fiction” was weird; I loved that, too. Ditto with Suzanne and “Sid and Nancy.” And yeah, “Repo Man” was weird.
23. What is the scariest movie you’ve seen?
Oh, god. “A Clockwork Orange.” At the art film house in CollegeTown. I was only 14, and I was freaked out for two weeks after seeing it. Clearly, my mother knew nothing about the movie, or she never would have allowed me to go. (And I would have lied and gone anyway.) Malcolm McDowell frightens me to this day. Nevertheless, I’d like to see it again. I am curious to see my adult reaction to it.
24. What is the funniest movie you’ve ever seen?
The movie that I probably laughed at the most was “Airplane!” This is not to say it is the funniest movie I’ve seen, but it “shirley” was one of the silliest, right up there with “Beavis and Butt-head Do America” and anything Python.
Maybe I’ll watch “Munich” tonight. Maybe.

No Sleep for the Stupid
Yes, I have coworkers (plural!) who still are in some kind of sleep-deprived stupor because we had to change the clocks TWO NIGHTS AGO.
Here’s a tip for you: Next year, GO TO BED EARLY. One hour early. Take a fucking sleeping pill if you have to. Or, if you’re still messed up three nights later (like, TONIGHT), go to bed one hour early tonight. Should do the trick, no? Am I a genius or what?
Unadaptable, bleary-eyed, can’t get their act together dumbasses.
