And So It Blows

Well, that storm really BLEW.

It blew down nine of my ten sections of new fence.  The fence that Tim and Paul put up a year and a half ago.  The fence that abuts the Trashholes’ yard and all their trash and their trashy cars that don’t run.  I don’t want to say Tim and Paul did a bad job, because I don’t think they did.  However, none of the older fence on the other side of the yard and along the backyard came down.  I think it’s just a case of “they don’t make things like they used to.”

Paul is going to check out the damage later this week and (I hope!) do the repair work this weekend.  I don’t know if anything is broken, meaning I’ll have to buy more fencing, or if it just needs to be reinstalled – securely.  I have a bad feeling I’m going to be shelling out the $$.  As for Tim, I don’t know if he’ll be available to help.  He probably will be busy pumping out his basement, just like he has to after every soaker.  I’m grateful I don’t have that headache.

The storm also blew two shutters off the house, one from the bathroom window and one from a family room window.  Different sides of the house.  Go figure.

Lastly, my garden flag was shredded, and the back doormat wound up in the herb garden.

Down the street, June’s trellis is a shambles, and there is a storm door lying on someone’s front lawn.  Branches and limbs everywhere, of course.

There haven’t been any hurricanes since I’ve lived in my cottage on the cove, and now I’m dreading it more than ever.  If that’s what 50 mph winds can do, I’m in trouble when the next hurricane hits.  Damn.  That’s a confirmation I really didn’t need.

I’ll deal with it, though.  It’s the price to pay for living on the coast.  And at least we didn’t get two feet of snow.

The Views Expressed in this Entry Are Not Necessarily Those of the Host

I was going to post some thoughts on the Don Imus brouhaha (that I’m so sick of already), but I’m white and I might get fired.

Oh, no, she didn’t.

What the hell.  Too late now.

1.  Yes, he’s an obnoxious, offensive jerk.
2.  No, I don’t listen to him.  (See #1 above.)  I know how to change stations/channels when I hear something I don’t want to listen to.
3.  Yes, he exercised poor judgment.
4.  No, I don’t believe he should be fired for what he said.  “The views expressed in this program are not necessarily those of the broadcaster.”  Duh.  That’s all you need.

I’m all about free speech and choice.  Censorship blows.

Just last week – aahhh, remember that more innocent time? – we touched on the subject of censorship at the gym.  I was going to post about it, but in true form didn’t get around to it.  I don’t recall the exact subject matter of the conversation, but someone (not me) made a good-natured crack, the kind that some Super Uptight person could possibly consider politically incorrect.  And I mean politically incorrect as that term has been taken to its ridiculous extreme.  Certainly, no one at the gym took offense at the remark.  Indeed, one woman (not me) ribbed, “You know, some people might say that’s politically incorrect.”

“Politically correct is censorship.”

Um, did I say that out loud?

Yes.  I did.  And I stand by it.  Unfortunately, people sometimes can be ill-mannered, inconsiderate, impolite, and just plain mean.  They can exercise poor judgment, and they can say hateful things.  And, worst of all, they can express views with which others disagree (gasp!).

But is censorship, in any form, the remedy?

“I’ll be opinionated while trying to be respectful of others’ opinions.”  That’s from my very first entry here.  Maybe we all need to try this – mutual respect.

Back to Dumbassmus.  A question:  Did he call them hos because they’re women or because they’re black?  ‘Cause I’m not hearing a lot of complaints about sexism.

(By the way, I’ll start using the term African-American as soon as everyone starts labeling me European-American.  Or better still, European-United Statesian.)

Whatever.  Here’s a banner I made a couple of years ago but have yet to run:

I ª MY FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS

You know, if colleges had never allowed women’s athletics in the first place, then we wouldn’t have this whole Imus controversy today.  Really, girls running around playing basketball – disgraceful.

Hello, Gorgeous

Two-hour training session on the new phone system this morning.  The trainer was very do-able, if you know what I mean.  Very.

The new system goes live tomorrow.  After two hours of lustful gazing, though, I’m afraid I know more about Dan’s lovely eyes than I do about the new telephones.

Purr – I mean, “Hello.”
